Any homeowner in the greater Chicago area will be happy to tell you about their energy bill woes.
That is any homeowner who hasn’t installed energy-saving double pane windows.
Energy prices are not going to get cheaper, so making our homes more energy efficient is vital both for our wallets as well as for reducing our consumption of energy resources.
One of the best and easiest ways to instantly cut your energy bills is to install new double pane windows.
Today, we want to talk about all of the reasons there are to install new double pane windows in your home.
A Short History of Dual Pane Windows
It seems as if double pane windows are something fairly new, but did you know that these were actually introduced back in 1947?!
It’s true. The Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company created dual pane windows so no one need put up and take down storm windows every fall and spring.
Storm windows work well for keeping out cold winter drafts, but once they are removed in the spring, there is nothing between the hot summer air and your air-conditioned home but one single pane of glass.
The Difference Between Single and Double Pane Windows
As the name itself says, double-pane windows mean that they have two layers of glass. This traps a layer of air (or gas) between the two glass panes.
Glass is a poor insulator. Experts say that approximately 70 percent of all energy loss occurs through windows and doors and chances are that you have many more (and larger) windows in your home than you do doors.
How Do Dual Pane Windows Work?
While dual pane windows don’t look any different from the outside, they certainly work differently.
The space in between the glass panes is either filled with air or Argon gas. Because gas is denser than air, insulating will be even more energy-efficient than plain air.
Double pane windows are more energy efficient because the air or gas pocket between the glass inhibits the transfer of cold or hot air.
Think about how using two blankets on your bed will keep you much warmer than one blanket. Double pane windows work very much the same way. They keep the warmth in and the cold out. In the summer months, the opposite occurs.
What About the U-Value?
You might have seen the term U-value used on some windows. The U-value is a way to measure how well the window insulates.
The lower the U-value, the better the window insulates.
What Are the Benefits of Double Pane Windows?
The most obvious benefit is a reduction in energy usage. Depending on the materials that your home is made from and where you live, estimates are that you can reduce energy usage by as much as 24 percent in the winter and 20 percent in the summer.
It’s important to remember that, in order to reap the benefits of lower energy costs, all windows in your home must be replaced, not just one or two.
Most people don’t realize that double-pane windows will also help to shield your home from excessive outdoor noise.
Noise pollution is a very real problem. We’ve become accustomed to some noises but imagine cutting your neighbor’s snow blower or leaf blower down to a mere muffled noise? Wouldn’t that be nice?
The noise reduction also works in reverse, so you and your family can enjoy more privacy. No one walking down the street will be able to hear your conversations or know what you are watching on TV. Oh yes, and the neighbors won’t be listening in on your family business either!
Double pane windows will also stabilize the overall temperature of your home. No more cold rooms or rooms that are so hot you don’t want to be inside, even with a fan running. You can say goodbye to those drafts once you’ve installed double pane windows!
When you install double pane windows, you will also greatly reduce or eliminate that annoying condensation that can form around the inside of the window frame. This means less mess and no dangerous mold or mildew can form.
Last, but not least, replacing your old, worn-out, leaky windows will add to your home’s value and style. Double pane windows come in a variety of designs and styles to suit your taste and your home’s architectural design.
