One day you will wake up and realize that there is no avoiding it; your house needs a new roof. Whether your roof is simply old and worn out or if Mother Nature took a swipe at your home and damaged the roof, it happens to all homes eventually.
One of the problems with getting a new roof is the time and mess involved. Most people think that they must move out, cover everything inside with sheets or plastic, and wait a few weeks, but this isn’t really true.
Did you know that you can probably get a new roof on your home in one day? It’s true!
Why would you want to do that? Let’s take a moment to talk about what is involved when putting new shingles on your home.
Shingles 101
Depending on the type of roof your home has, on average, you can expect a well-cared-for roof to last between 15-20 years.
While tile, slate, or copper roofs can last up to 50 years or longer, the majority of homes in the greater Chicago area are asphalt shingle/composition roofs, which have a lifespan of about 20 years, give or take 5 years.
Your roof might last longer if you give it regular maintenance, if no damage should occur (from falling trees, branches, etc.) and if higher quality shingles were used at the time of install.
Like most things, when it comes to roofing shingles, you get what you pay for. Architectural shingles, for example, are a premium thing that can last 30 years or longer. Of course, they cost more at about $400 per square foot. Typical cement/organic shingles cost about $150 per square foot.
What Do I Have to Do While the Workers Are Here?
While you might think that you have to vacate the premises, you don’t. Keep in mind that workers are going to be walking around the outside and top of the home, and there will be quite a bit of noise.
If you work from home, you might want to consider working from another location, such as a friend’s house, for the day.
If you have children at home, you can usually explain to them that there will be workers fixing the house and that they should not go outside without your permission and supervision, especially when the old roofing material is being removed. Have an alternate plan so that you can take the children elsewhere for the day if the noise bothers them.
Whether you are home or not, any pets you may have will need to be secured either inside the house, the garage, the basement, or some other location where they will be safe. The loud noises bothersome animals and if your pets are skittish, you might want to take them to the groomers for the day, or to a friend’s house.
Otherwise, there is nothing special you need to do. You can stay home or not; the choice is entirely yours.
A Roof in One Day? Is That Possible?
Yes, it really is possible.
Of course, there are some instances and unexpected circumstances where underlying structural damage to the roof was not discovered during an inspection and it will need to be repaired, which may mean the roof cannot be replaced in one day. However, this will usually only delay the replacement of the roof singles one additional day.
At A&D, we have the knowledge, the skills, the manpower, and the connections to get the job done and get it done quickly!
We have longtime partnerships with shingle manufacturers and suppliers, who can provide us with the shingles you have chosen and deliver them the day before the roof is removed.
Our experts know that you don’t want a dumpster in front of your home any longer than necessary, which is why we use trailers which we bring with us when we arrive and remove at the end of the day when we leave.
A&D employs dozens of workers. Depending on the size of your home, we will get all the workers we need so that the job can be completed in most cases in only one day.
Not all roofing contractors can do this, but at A&D, it’s no problem!
Top 3 Reasons for Replacing Your Roof in One Day
- No worries (for the most part) about changes in the weather
- No need to deal with construction mess for days on end.
- Why not?! Why have workers and noise around your home for days when you can complete it all in a single day?!
Things You Should Know
As we stated earlier, there are occasional complications that can end up delaying your roof. Some of the possible delays include:
- Sudden, unexpected changes in the weather.
- Discovering structural repairs that were not apparent during the inspection.
- Extremely complex roofing architecture.
- Layers of extra roof shingles.
In most instances, if the weather is warm and there is no structural damage, our crews can easily replace a 40 square foot roof in a single day.
