Things You Should Know
Replacing your home’s roof or siding is one of the best investments you can make to your property. Not only do today’s roofing and siding designs look beautiful, they’re also designed to last as long as you own your home. As you prepare for your home project to be installed, there are several things you can do to insure the job unfolds as smoothly as possible. Here are some tips to keep in mind before the installers arrive.
Make Sure the Installers Have Access to Your Roof and Siding.
It goes with out saying that the installers will need access to your house to get the job done. While a professional roofing company will work as neatly as possible, tearing off an old roof or siding and installing new is a big project that takes up a lot of space around the perimeter of your house. To protect outdoor items from debris, and ensure the installers can work as efficiently as possible. It is important to clear driveways, sidewalks and cars from garage before the crew arrives.
Clear Valuables from the Attic.
Experienced roofers will work hard to minimize the dust and debris created during your roof’s installation, but there’s no getting around the fact that roofing is a messy, dusty job. If you store heirlooms or valuable items in your attic, consider moving them to a safe spot until the job is complete. If certain items are too bulky or heavy to move, try covering them with drop cloths, or plastic sheeting to protect them from dust and shingle debris.
Make Arrangements for Children and Pets.
If you have pets or young children, you might want to make arrangements for them to stay with a friend or relative while your project is being complete. The construction that takes place during a roofing or siding job installation can be noisy, which can disturb pets and small children. Because construction equipment and material can also pose a hazard to children, many parents choose to keep their children indoors while the crew is on site.
Be a Good Neighbor.
Before our crew gets started, it’s a good idea to give your neighbor a heads up that you’re replacing your roof or siding. This small courtesy can go a long way. If your house is in close proximity to your neighbor, our crew might need access to their property.
Prep the Inside
Although our experienced crews do their best to keep the dust and noise to a minimum during your installation, any type of heavy construction on your home’s frame can cause strong vibrations that shift mirrors and photos on the walls. To reduce the risk of photos or mirrors falling during construction, it is best to temporarily remove any hanging frames or mirrors from your walls. You should also consider removing any glass scones on your light fixtures during construction.
Prep the Outside
Installing a new roof or siding means nailing down thousands of shingles or siding panels. As a homeowner, the last thing you want to experience is a flat tire caused by a roofing nail, or even worse stepping on a roofing nail with your bare feet. Our crews perform a thorough clean up once the installation is complete. This includes using powerful magnets and special rolling tools designed to pick up nails. Before your installation, cut your grass to short length, as nails can easily get missed when they fall into long grass. If you have a satellite on your roof or walls, you should work with your cable provider to get it realigned after the job is complete. If you have flowerbeds or landscape around your home, we will do our best to protect them by covering them with tarps. However, in hot summer months this may cause some areas to temporarily dry out. You should also remove any hanging lights, plants, and solar lawn fixtures while your project is being completed.
